Despite the hype around the first Test between Pakistan and Australia which kicked off in Rawalpindi on Friday, March 4, it turned out to be a one-sided show on Day 1. Pakistan dominated the day’s proceedings and were solidly placed at 245 for 1 at stumps with opener Imam-ul-Haq slamming an unbeaten hundred. The home team decided to bat first after winning the toss and both teams fielded their expected playing XI for the game. However, some home fan was not yet ready to turn complacent.

Naseem Shah, who came in as the last-minute replacement for Covid-hit Haris Rauf, got into the playing XI besides spinners Nauman Ali and Sajid Khan. The Pakistan opening duo batted out the new ball really well and weaved a hundred-run partnership. Abdullah Shafique perished against spinner Nathan Lyon after scoring 44 while Haq remained not out on 132. He hit 14 fours and two sixes while Azhar Ali made 64 not out. The duo added 140 runs for the second wicket and will look to continue from where they stopped on Day 1.

Meanwhile, a fan on the ground during the game was spotted holding a cheeky poster pulling the legs of Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne. He reminded Pakistan to be aware of Labuschagne’s knocks and pointed the way the latter says no run after playing a dot ball.

“Beware of Marnus. He will say No Run all day and end up with a 100,” the poster’s caption read.

Marnus Labushcagne’s first stint in the subcontinent

One must note that Labuschagne is the No.1 Test batter in ICC rankings and is very consistent when it comes to red-ball cricket. The right-handed batter has 2,220 runs in 23 Tests at an average of 56.92. However, the current series will be a big test for him as he is yet to prove his credentials in the subcontinent.
