Pakistan came into the ODI series with hope and determination. Conditions in New Zealand were always going to be tough for the visiting side. However, the team came in with belief that it would do well and take something back from the series. Players like Babar Azam and Hasan Ali are exciting prospects for Pakistan and the hosts knew that the Asian giants cannot be taken lightly.
The Black Caps toppled the Men in Green in the first two ODIs and were heading into the 3rd ODI setting sights on the trophy. Little did we know that Pakistan would falter such easily. They probably had one of their worst days in ODI cricket.
You do not need to look too far when you got Trent Boult in your line-up. He tore apart the Pakistan batting inside the first ten overs and from thereon there was only one direction the match was heading. The wickets fell like nine pins and coach Grant Flower must be very disappointed with his side’s performances in the series. Pakistan bundled out for a mere 74 runs and came close to posing the lowest ODI score.
The green army’s batting woes in pace and swinging conditions seem to be getting just worse. In each of the three games, the top has have failed to trouble the Black Caps. The University Oval in Dunedin was a slower pitch as compared to the other pitches. The drizzle didn’t help their cause.
“Yeah, well, the ball gets a bit wetter and there’s a bit more zip in the wicket. But it’s still no excuse, like I said. The guys are good enough to adapt, but at this stage we haven’t been good enough, or smart enough. Against world-class bowlers, you have to be ready from ball one, but in the first ten overs so far, we’ve been blown away” Flower was quoted as saying.
Lack of foot movement
Just when the series was on line, Pakistan showed that they were no match for the Black Caps. Contrastingly, Munro and Guptil have dominated the bowlers and played positively in the powerplay.
“To be honest, it’s apprehension and getting caught on the crease with guys’ lack of foot movement. The better way is trying to be more positive and try and take on the bowling a bit more. We’ve probably been just a bit apprehensive. I think if you get a few shots away and take the challenge to the bowlers, then all of a sudden they have to think of their lengths a bit, so hopefully we’re going to see a more positive display on our batting side,” Flower stated.
