England got off to an abysmal start on Day One of the 1st Ashes Test match at The Gabba in Brisbane. The Joe Root-led outfit was bowled out for just 147, as Australia sliced through their batting lineup.

And, former Aussie cricketer Ian Chappell feels that England skipper Joe Root might be a good batsman, but he is surely not a good leader. Chappell also added that Root does not have great imagination as the leader of the side.

Chappell also feels that Pat Cummins will turn out to be a good captain for the Australian side, and even opined that by the time The Ashes draws to a close, Cummins will be ahead of Root in terms of captaincy.

“I think he’s (Root) a very good batsman but he’s not much of a captain. He doesn’t have a great imagination and I think that’s important in Australia.

Pat Cummins will be a good captain, I think it will take him a while to get into the job but I think by the end of the series, I think Pat will be miles in front of Joe (Root) as a captain and if that’s the case, Australia will win pretty comfortably,” said Ian Chappell as quoted by India Today.

Ben Stokes would be a good captain: Ian Chappell

Ian Chappell also reckons that England all rounder Ben Stokes will be a good leader. Adding that Stokes has a good cricketing brain, Chappell concluded by stating that Joe Root can even take advice from a player like Stokes.

“I think Stokes would be a good captain. Aggressive players don’t always make good captains but I think Stokes has a lot going for him. He has a great cricket brain, he’s a great batsman and bowler and don’t underestimate his fielding. I think he would be a good captain and Joe Root would do well to listen to him,” concluded Ian Chappell.
