The third Test between South Africa and Australia at the Newlands in Cape Town is currently underway. The series has been a witness to some controversies, which has hogged the headlines thereafter. During the ongoing Test, another issue came to the fore. Patrick Cummins, the Aussie speedster, seemed to have stopped the ball on the pitch with his spikes. The incident is most likely to be investigated by match referee Andy Pycroft.

However, the pacer admitted to his mistake and affirmed the incident as intentional while highlighting the reactions of the on-field umpires following the happening. “It was a mistake. I looked straight back and the umpire (Richard Illingworth) started to giggle. It was very unintentional. Yes (they did check the ball), but obviously there were no issues, so he passed it on. Impressive comeback by Cummins

Cummins was pretty ordinary in his first ten overs where he dished out way too many looseners for the batsmen to work with. However, he stormed back with a superlative spell which ripped apart the Proteas batting. “Just felt like I wasn’t… probably hitting my length. But the ball starting swinging a little bit and the two batsmen batting really well. We spoke about just needing that opportunity where if we got one, we could get two or three pretty quickly” he added

During South Africa’s innings, AB de Villiers scorched some boundaries and looked ominous for the Aussie. However, Cummins nipped scalped him, which also triggered a collapse by the Proteas batsmen. The right-arm fast bowler talked about the scalp and its importance. “Fortunately, I bowled a nice half-volley and AB hit it to mid-off, and for me, it just felt like I had a really good rhythm down that end. The ball was swinging pretty consistently, and I was happy.” Cummins iterated.
