Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has revealed on Twitter that it will be important for the middle-order of Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik to get India home as they did in the game against Australia at Adelaide. After having a fantastic IPL season, Chennai Super Kings’ Ambati Rayudu was slotted straight into the Indian team starting from the Asia Cup.

Since then, the right-handed Rayudu has played some crucial knocks for the Indian team, while also being handy in the field for Virat Kohli. Doubts on India’s no.4 has been erased with Rayudu’s form. However, in the recent series, these doubts have resurfaced after seeing a struggling Rayudu in Australia. In the opening match, Rayudu played a disastrous knock as both Kohli and he exited the match without making any difference to the Indian scoreboard.

It was left for MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to take care of the proceedings in the opener, with the required rate creeping high. India failed to grasp the opening ODI despite having a solid middle-order partnership. In the second ODI, it was again the partnership between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni which gave India the glimmer of hope at a victory. After a good start from the openers, the onus was up onto Virat Kohli and Ambati Rayudu to elevate the Indian innings. However, the latter failed for the second time in a row, with 36 ball 24 run knock at Adelaide.

Sehwag says:

It was up to Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik to finish the innings and the duo managed to put up 57 runs required for an Indian victory. The former Indian skipper struck a 54-ball 55 runs as team India got the victory in the second ODI. Sehwag, on Twitter, commented that a lot will be expected from this Indian middle order after their exploits in the IPL earlier last year.

His tweet read “Will need more matches with 4-5-6 playing handy match-winning knocks,” suggesting that this will be most likely the trio that would feature in the World Cup for Team India. However, there are dark clouds surfacing over Rayudu’s form after the two ODI’s against Australia.
