Indian skipper Virat Kohli was on song yet again after he notched up his 15th Test hundred during third day’s play of the ongoing fourth Test match against England at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. With this century, the dream run for the 28-year-old continued as he eclipsed few impressive records.
First, he became the first Indian to hit 1000 Test runs in a calendar year since Rahul Dravid did it in 2011. He also became the first Indian captain to score 1000-plus runs in a year after Sachin Tendulkar (1997) and Dravid (2006).
Also, his 500-plus runs in a series is only the second for an Indian captain, after Sunil Gavaskar. In the process, he also became the 14th and sixth fastest Indian to hit 4000 Test runs. Besides, his 2400* at an average of over 85 is season’s leading tally in all formats of the game.
Kohli played for the entire day after coming out to bat when Cheteshwar Pujara lost his wicket to Jake ball off the second delivery in the first over. He later thwarted the opposition with a solid stand for the 3rd wicket with the well-set Murali Vijay. But as it happens with Virat most of the times, the onus of carrying forward the team fell on him after England snapped a cluster of wickets in the second session of the day. And, as anticipated, Kohli lived up to his reputation and dominated England in a counter-attacking display of batting and helped India sail through the day pretty easily.
The twitter space was abuzz with everyone applauding his entertaining work. But, among all the thousands of tweets which flooded after the end of day’s play, it was Piers Morgan, the celebrity British journalist, who caught everyone’s attention. Just after Kohli reached his second hundred of the series, Morgan took to his favourite micro-blogging site and declared that the India Test captain is the “New Little Master.”
