Cricket presents fierce completion on the field where teams strain every muscle to topple their oppositions. However, apart from that, the game also promotes health and well-being across the globe. South Africa hosts an ODI game at the Wanderers in Johannesburg every year where players don the pink jersey, which is different from their regular outfit. The Pink Day is celebrated in order to promote awareness of breast cancer and the jerseys of the cricketers are raised for open bidding.

The proceeds from the game are donated to the Breast Care Unit at the Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital which is headed by Doctor Sarah Nietz and her team of specialist nurses. The clinic is known for providing quality breast care irrespective of their geographical location and other socio-economic elements. Every year almost 350 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and the institution lends their helping hand and provides services to seven district hospitals.

The noble initiative

The motto of the initiative for the noble cause was to raise more than one million Rand. Hence, apart from the cricketers, the crowd was also encouraged to wear pink attires on the ground. As per Super Sport, the Pink Day Auction is done and dusted and the list of auctioned jerseys have been released. AB de Villiers who was making a comeback fetched the highest bid with Rand 56,000 along with fast-bowler Kagiso Rabada. Quinton de Kock and Francois de Plessis also fetched handsome bids with Rand 30,000 and Rand 50,000 respectively.

Apart from South Africa, Australian cricket is also involved in promoting breast cancer awareness. The nation hosts a Pink Test match for the Glenn McGrath Foundation, which was founded by McGrath and his English-born wife Jane McGrath in 2005. The third day of the Sydney Test match every year is also known as Jane McGrath Day.
