Indian batter skipper Mayank Agarwal has been left out of the squad to play the fifth rescheduled Test match between India and England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on May 22 (Sunday) announced India’s 17-member squad, but Agarwal’s name was not on the list.

To note, Mayank was part of the Indian squad during their last Test series against Sri Lanka. Apart from him, the other opening batter Priyank Panchal has also been left out. With Mayank out of the Indian squad, the right-handed batter could play for his state Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy knockouts, slated to start on June 6 in Bengaluru.

Mayank Agarwal has had a poor IPL season as well

Skipper Mayank Agarwal has not been able to perform with the bat in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The opening batter also sacrificed his position for England’s batter Jonny Bairstow and that has paid some dividends to the Kings from Punjab. However, they are out of the playoffs race and playing their final group stage match on Sunday.

Talking about Mayank’s performance in Test cricket, the 31-year-old has represented India in 21 matches and has amassed 1488 runs so far. He plays at an average of 41.33 and has already stroked six fifties and four hundreds in the longest format of the game. With Agarwal and Panchal dropped, Mayank’s close friend KL Rahul looks the ideal candidate to open the innings along with skipper Rohit Sharma for the fifth and final Test match against England.

Apart from Mayank, Ishant Sharma is also gone missing from the Indian squad. However, senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara, ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and talented pacer Prasidh Krishna have been named in the Indian squad. Apart from the Test match, India and England will also face each other in three ODIs and T20Is each from July 7 to 17.

Meanwhile, Twitter isn’t happy with Mayank Agarwal getting dropped after performing as per expectations on most occasions while even batting in the middle-order for the team.

Meanwhile, here are some Twitter reactions:
