The U19 World Cup is a platform for youngsters where they can launch their careers to greater heights. The likes of Virat Kohli, Brian Lara and many other legendary cricketers have emerged after playing the tournament. It’s undoubtedly a proud moment for a budding cricketer to represent his team at the U19 level.

But what if a roadblock pulls the curtains down on the opportunity? 17-year-old Kalana Perera experienced something similar in the ongoing tournament in New Zealand. The left-arm fast bowler was selected in Sri Lanka’s squad for the World Cup 2018. He played in a practice match against Australia U19 prior to the main event.

Perera bowled three overs and conceded 18 runs, however, didn’t get a chance to bat. He didn’t get a game either against Ireland U19 and Afghanistan U19 in Whangarei. Most recently, he twisted his ankle following which he will be flying back home. Subsequently, his World Cup endeavour came to a premature end.

The tragedy for Perera

Mahinda Halangode, the team-manager, talked about Perara’s injury in an exclusive interview with Wisden India. “He stepped on the ball and twisted his ankle while training at Kensington Park on Tuesday,” he said. He also mentioned about the gravity of Perera’s injury and the time it will take for him to recover from the injury.

“X-rays have revealed that he has torn his ligament, and the doctors are saying it will take at least three to four weeks to heal. He will be going back to Sri Lanka to undergo rehabilitation.” Halangode added. Meanwhile, Thilan Prashanth, a right-arm pacer, has been announced as Perera’s replacement in the 15-man squad.

Sri Lanka started the tournament with a comprehensive victory against Ireland U19. However, they slumped to a shocking defeat against the Afghans. Their next game is against Pakistan U19 on January 19 and will look to stage a comeback.
