The eliminator of the ongoing third edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) witnessed one of the most breathtaking matches of the season. Quetta Gladiators fell just one run short of the target when they needed 23 runs to win in the last over. It was the miraculous hitting from Anwar Ali which gave them the chance but were eventually ruled out of the tournament. However, it was the approach of Mir Hamza off the last ball of the match which didn’t please the skipper Sarfraz Ahmed and Moin Khan.

It was a do or die game for both Gladiators and the defending champions Peshawar Zalmi as the tournament came back to where it belongs, in Pakistan. Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore hosted the game as the jam-packed crowd was treated with a humdinger of a contest. After being inserted to bat first, Zalmi posted 156 runs in 20 overs on the back of a stunning knock from Liam Dawson.

Thrilling chase

Quetta Gladiators were always favourites to gun down the total on a flat wicket and were nicely placed at the halfway mark with Mohammad Nawaz and Sarfraz playing well. However, they fell off successive deliveries only to bring Peshawar back in the game. The wickets continued to tumble and they were left with 25 runs to score off the final over and the hero with the bat Dawson was handed over the responsibility.

Anwar Ali though had other ideas who smashed 22 runs off the first 5 deliveries. But there was more drama off the final delivery as he miscued a full toss to the long on only to be dropped by Umaid Asif. However, he recovered quickly enough to throw the ball only to find Mir Hamza short by a significant margin. It was surprising that the batsmen didn’t run a couple of runs which would have taken the match to the super over.

Soon after the heartbreaking loss both Sarfraz and Moin Khan were seen saying something to Hamza who was returning to the dressing room. The second qualifier of the PSL will now be played between Peshawar and Karachi on Wednesday.
