The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in a bid to increase the popularity of the PSL, decided to rope in singer Pitbull for a short performance. The American rapper will perform at the opening ceremony of the league. For a 10-minute show, the PCB will reportedly pay him a whopping amount of Rs 10 crores ($0.7 million).
According to the reports in The News, the cricket board will be bearing the expenses of the crew of Pitbull as well. The decision has received mixed responses from one and all. But, the board has surely received a lot of flak from the franchise owners. According to them, the PCB should have invited local artists instead of the 38-year-old rapper at such a hefty amount.
An attempt to draw the attention of the global audience
Despite the criticism, it is learnt that the PCB took the decision to gain attention from the global audience. The league, however, being just a few days away from the start is yet to find a major flagship sponsor. The opening ceremony is scheduled to be held on 14 February 2019 at the Dubai International Stadium.
The other star performers at the ceremony include Fawad Khan, Aima Baig, Shuja Haider and British singer Marcia Barrett from German band Boney M. The fourth edition of the league will be played for over a month until 17 March 2019. A total of 34 matches will be played during this period and six teams are set to participate in the league. Each of the six teams will get to play 10 matches each before the playoffs.
Three venues in the UAE and two venues in Pakistan have been confirmed for the league. The tournament will kick off with the game between Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars. This game will be played right after the completion of the opening ceremony.
