India A and South Africa A locked horns in the first of the two-match unofficial Test series at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The hosts comfortably won the match by an innings and 30 runs courtesy of some stupendous all-round performances. Their batting was one of the main reasons behind their resounding show against Khaya Zondo’s men.
Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal were incredible as both notched centuries to help India A pile on a massive lead of 338 runs after the completion of both teams’ first innings. While Shaw notched 136 runs, Agarwal racked up 220 runs. Moreover, they also put on 277 runs for the first wicket to help their team wipe out South Africa’s first innings score.
I know what the headlines will be tomorrow
Quite expectantly, talks of them being drafted into the Indian national team has already sparked. Rahul Dravid, India A’s head coach, was asked about their chances of playing Test cricket for India. However, the former Indian cricketer preferred not answering the question. Nevertheless, he praised them for their jaw-dropping display of batsmanship.
“It’s a bit of a loaded question and I know what the headlines will be tomorrow when I answer that question. All I will say is, I think they have shown over the last year or so with their performances that they are playing very good cricket. It’s nice to see them developing and growing as players.
Whether there is an opportunity or not is not for me to decide. Mayank was quite exceptional in this game and Prithvi has shown continuous improvement in every level he has played,” Dravid was quoted as saying in Times Now.
Both Shaw and Agarwal have performed exceptionally in recent times. In India A’s previous series’ against England Lions and Windies A, Shaw notched 250 runs with a highest of 188. He also did well in the triangular series on English soil, which India A won. Mayank was brilliant last season and he has replicated the touch this time as well, having already scored three centuries and a double century.
