With each passing day, concerns over the participation of the Indian cricket team in the Champions Trophy 2017 is growing exponentially. BCCI should have announced the full squad by now and have missed the deadline by 10 days as they had to submit the list by May 25.
Former Indian cricketers Zaheer Khan, Gundappa Viswanath, Sandeep Patil, Sanjay Manjrekar, Aakash Chopra, Ajit Agarkar, Venkatesh Prasad, Saba Karim, Murali Kartik, and Deep Dasgupta, all agree to the fact that India’s participation in the tournament should not be hindered due conflict of interests between BCCI and ICC.
India A, U-19 coach Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar also voiced their opinion on this heated matter. The stalwarts of Indian cricket want the Virat Kohli and co. to defend as well as retain the Champions Trophy title coming June.
Rahul and Sachin are currently occupied with the IPL, with their respective roles is Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians. Mumbai have already qualified for the playoffs, while Daredevils have an outside chance to progress into the playoffs.
In a meeting held in April, the BCCI was heavily outvoted in favour of the new revenue model, governance structure, and constituency. BCCI is still adamant about the continuation of the ‘Big Three Model’ which would generate revenues as compared to the proposed new model.
Earlier today, CoA had assured Indian captain Virat Kohli and co. that they would participate in the tournament despite all the speculations and apprehensions. The committee has been constantly in touch with head coach Anil Kumble and Indian captain Virat Kohli. They also directed the BCCI to announce the Indian team for the CT 2017 immediately.
A definitive decision on the team’s participation will be taken by the BCCI at the special general meeting to be held in Delhi on May 7. While the CoA has made it clear that they will not let the officials decide on pulling out of the tournament.
