Priya Punia is the name which is doing the rounds over the last few days in the cricketing arena. She received her maiden call-up to the national T20I side for upcoming New Zealand tour and will be soon joining the squad to live her dream. However, all the glory hasn’t come easily to her. Her father built a cricket ground to fulfill her dreams and Priya made sure that she repaid the faith shown by him.
Priya expected the national call-up in 2015 itself after a brilliant domestic season which included a 95-run knock for North Zone against the West Zone. She had also smashed 59 off just 42 deliveries while playing for India A against New Zealand A. But she didn’t lose heart after being ignored at that time and concentrated on working even harder to make it to the Indian team.
In the meantime, Congress President Rahul Gandhi is impressed with the inspiring story of the cricketer and has showered praises on Priya Punia and her father in the Facebook post. “It was wonderful to read about your journey Priya and that of your strong-willed father… All the best,” he said.
Sachin’s kind words
Priya’s story has also led to the former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar speak highly of the cricketer who will be soon sharing the dressing room with the likes of Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana. He took to his official Twitter handle to stress the fact that how hard work can pave the way for success and wished all the luck for the 22-year-old who will most probably make her international debut in New Zealand next month.
“This shows how hard work and a strong support system can pave the road to success. Truly inspiring! #PriyaPunia,” Sachin wrote in his appreciation tweet. It will be interesting to see how Priya Punia makes it count at the highest level after successfully managing to grab a place among legends in the Indian team.
