Ramiz Raja 'erroneously' tweets about ECB chief's resignation, apologizes later

Ian Watmore stepped down as England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman with immediate effect on October 7 (Thursday). It was indeed an astonishing decision from Whatmore as he didn’t even complete one year of the term. Although Watmore didn’t say the same, he reportedly lost the confidence of fellow ECB members and the counties after a demanding couple of weeks.

The 63-year-old became the eye of the storm after cancelling England’s tour of Pakistan in October. Citing the reason, Watmore said the call was taken considering the physical and mental well-being of players. The reasoning didn’t please many members of cricket fraternity as ECB faced backlash from different corners. If this wasn’t enough, Watmore failed to agree a domestic schedule for the next couple of years.

All this followed a resignation from Watmore as ECB boss. While many prominent members of the cricket fraternity expressed their views over the news, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ramiz Raja’s post hogged the maximum limelight. “Breaking: ECB chief has resigned,” Raja had written in a tweet.

Although many journalists, media houses, and even fans made such posts, an announcement tweet from the PCB boss left many fans wondering. The former Pakistan captain also got trolled for the same. Notably, Raja was quick to delete his tweet. However, the damage was done as the screenshot of the post went viral on social media.

Ramiz Raja issues apology

Raja even issued an apology later, saying the tweet was posted by mistake. “The earlier tweet was erroneously put on my Twitter account. Apologies,” the veteran tweeted.

Coming back to Watmore, the veteran said he took the decision for the mindfulness of my his wellbeing and that of the game. “It is with regret that I step down as Chair of the ECB, but I do so in mindfulness of my own wellbeing and that of the game which I love,” Watmore said in a statement.

“I was appointed to the post in a pre-pandemic era, but Covid has meant the role and its demands on time are dramatically different to all our original expectations, which has taken a personal toll on me,” he added.
