It was expected to be a fairytale homecoming for the No.1 ranked T20I side in the world. Wasn’t it? Back in front of familiar faces, their own people, the likes of Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Amir were expected to breathe fire. Sumptuous cover-drives, gob-smacking sixes, stumps cartwheeling, Man! It was expected to be quite a spectacle. And, there were a plethora of reasons to feel so optimistic about the whole damn thing, for a Pakistani fan.
After all, the number of games their team had dropped since the last T20 World Cup three years ago was at parity with the number of games their opponents had won in the same period. And, after ten of Sri Lanka’s senior players including the likes of Lasith Malinga and Angelo Matthews, Kusal Mendis, Thisara Perera had opted out of the tour due to security reasons, there was no doubt whatsoever to think of anything but an easy stroll in the park for the hosts.
The signs were apparent during the ODIs but it was only in the T20Is that the complete picture was seen. In Danushka Gunathilaka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga and Oshada Fernando, Sri Lanka found a new match-winner in every game that led to them achieving the unthinkable: whitewash Pakistan in their own den.
Ramiz Raja gets trolled by the translator; Ashwin joins the fun
But, despite the upset, easily the most memorable thing to come out of this series is Ramiz Raja’s post-match interview of the ‘Player of the Series’ recipient, Wanindu Hasaranga. With the youngster comfortable in speaking his native language, Sri Lanka’s selector was used as a translator.
When Raja congratulated the leg-spinner and asked whether it was his best performance to date, Hasaranga replied with a plain ‘Yes’ in English. In a hilarious turn-of-events, Ramiz pulled the mike towards the translator who informed Raja that, ‘He Said Yes’, leaving the former Pakistani captain to nod in embarrassment.
Here is the video
