Tamil Nadu all-rounder Baba Indrajith will lead the side in the upcoming Ranji Trophy and he has been picked to replace batsman Abhinav Mukund who was at the helm in a disappointing campaign last season. The 2018-19 season of the elite domestic tournament will kick off on November 1 and continue till February next year. The total number of teams this year edition will be 37, nine more than the previous edition.
Indrajith, who made his first-class debut in 2013, was in a mixed form in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, hitting one century and three fifties. The 24-year-old hit a double ton on his Duleep Trophy debut last season, imitating the feat of his twin brother Baba Aparajith in the 2013-14 season.
However, he had to sweat it out more compared to his brother and the choice of him as the captain of his state in the premier Ranji Trophy tournament means he has finally got a big break.
Tamil Nadu will hope Indirajith delivers both as captain and player
Baba Indrajith has played 42 first-class games, 29 List A and 16 T20s since making his debut five years ago. He has scored over 3,600 runs and has eight hundreds so far. He averages over 49 in the four-day matches and played as the vice-captain of his side last year also producing good performances with the bat. The Tamil Nadu side will hope that the youngster excels both as a player and captain in the upcoming season as well.
Tamil Nadu, who failed to win a single game in the Ranji Trophy last year (drew five, lost one) and could not qualify for the quarter-finals, have been clubbed with a number of good sides in Group B of the tournament this time. Last year’s captain Mukund had a poor run in the tournament, managing just 247 runs in nine innings at an average of 30. His failure was considered to be one reason why his side failed to deliver in the season.
