The second round of the ongoing 2019-20 Ranji Trophy kicked off across the length and breadth of the country today. After having endured a shellacking at the hands of Mumbai in the opening round, Baroda redeemed themselves a bit, on the first day of their Round 2 Elite Group A & B encounter against Madhya Pradesh.

An all-round bowling effort-led by Anureet Singh 3-24, Lukman Meriwala 3-43 and Soyeb Sopariya- Baroda ran through MP’s batting-unit, subjecting them to a 125 all-out in 43.3 overs. In reply, Baroda too stuttered as they lost their first three wickets for 52. Vishnu Solanki [27*] and skipper Krunal Pandya [22*] ensured no further damages were done as Baroda went into stumps at 3-86.

In the Plate group encounter between Nagaland and Manipur, Imliwati Lemtur was the star of the day for his side as his spell of 7-25 ensured that Manipur were bowled out for 116 in 50.1 overs. In reply, Nagaland got off to the worst possible start as both of their openers perished for a duck. But, Rongsen Jonathan [79] and Shrikant Mundhe [68*] ensured that slide was addressed, as Nagaland finished the day in a dominant position at 4-193.

Ashwin’s five-for leads the charge for Tamil Nadu; Faiz Fazal warms up with a hundred

It was the spin pair of Ravichandran Ashwin [5-65] and Ravishrinivasan Sai Kishore [3-22] who ensured that Himachal Pradesh was never able to break the shackles. Ashwin claimed a five-wicket haul while Sai Kishore claimed three as Himachal Pradesh were bowled out for 158 in 71.4 overs. In reply, Abhinav Mukund [6*] and K Mukunth [2*] safely negotiated the last three overs the day and ensured Tamil Nadu went to stumps unscathed.

Skipper Faiz Fazal’s 136 and a half-century from Wasim Jaffer [60] headlines what was a dominant batting display by the defending champions Vidarbha on the opening day of their Round 2 encounter against Rajasthan. In another Elite Group A& B fixture, Delhi was bowled for 215 against Andhra.

Skipper Nitish Rana [51] and Lalit Yadav [50] were the sole contributors in what was an appalling display of batting. KV Sasikanth [5-38] claimed a five-wicket haul and he was ably supported by Paidikalva Vijaykumar, who claimed 3-47. In reply, Andhra too find themselves in a spot of bother with both of their openers dismissed for 9 and 0 respectively.
