Ranji Trophy 2021-22: Prithvi Shaw to lead Mumbai, Arjun Tendulkar included in 20-member squad

The swashbuckling opener Prithvi Shaw has been appointed as the captain of Mumbai for the first two matches of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season on Wednesday, December 29. Mumbai who has won the high-profile tournament on 41 occasions is placed in Elite nine-team Group C along with Karnataka, Delhi, Hyderabad, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand.

Mumbai will play their opening fixture of the mega event on January 13 against Maharashtra. The team will then lock horns with Delhi on January 20 in Kolkata. Opening up about Shaw’s appointment, Mumbai chief selector Salil Ankola heaped praises on the batter.

“Prithvi is a brilliant captain and fantabulous opening batsman, what else you need,” Mumbai chief selector Salil Ankola told as quoted by TOI.

Back in the month of March, Shaw had led the Mumbai side to glory in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also exuded his sheer flair with the willow piling up 827 runs from eight matches at an incredible average of 165.50 which included as many as four centuries. Thus, the batter will be all keen to dominate the proceedings in this tournament as well.

Young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal middle-order batters Sarfaraz Khan, Arman Jaffer Aakarshit Gomel, and keeper batter Aditya Tare have made it to the 20 member squad. The selection committee comprising of Gulam Parkar, Sunil More, Prasad Desai, and Anand Yalvigi have also selected all-rounder Shivam Dube. He has featured in one ODI and 13 T20Is for the country.

Dhaval Kulkarni who has a plethora of experience under his belt is all set to lead the fast bowling unit of Mumbai. Medium-pacer Mohit Awasthi, left-arm spinner Shams Mulani, off-spinner Shashank Attarde, and left-arm medium-pacer Roystan Dias have also made the cut. Whereas on the other hand, fast-bowling all-arounder Arjun Tendulkar has also made it to the Mumbai squad. With a formidable team, the side will aim to make an impact in the tournament.
