The much-awaited Ranveer Singh-starrer movie ’83’ will hit the theaters in June this year. The Bollywood movie is based on India’s historic and miraculous win at the 1983 World Cup. The film was originally scheduled to release on April 10 last year. However, the makers had to postpone the release date in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Later, the release date of the film was pushed to 25 December. However, in November, the film was again delayed to the first quarter of 2021 as the makers were not willing to release it at a time when the theatres were not running at full capacity. There were also rumours that 83 might release on an OTT platform. Director Kabir Khan had later confirmed that the makers were offered huge sum by streaming platforms to release the film directly online.

The makers were, however, not ready to release their project on OTT as Kabir confirmed that the movie would come out only in theatres. And on Friday, Ranveer, who will essay the role of World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, took to Twitter to confirm the release date. Interestingly, India’s campaign at the 1983 World Cup had started on the same date with a warm-up game.

“June 4th, 2021 !!!! πŸπŸ† in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. See you in cinemas !!!” wrote Ranveer.

Talking about the star-studded cast of the movie, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer’s wife in real life, will also essay the role of his reel life wife Romi Bhatia. Harrdy Sandhu will play the role of Madan Lal while Chirag Patil will portray the role of his father Sandeep Patil. Veteran actor Boman Irani will play the role of Farokh Engineer.

Team India’s historic triumph

India’s triumph at the 1983 World Cup was nothing less than a miracle. Kapil Dev & Co. were the firm underdogs and not many had given them a chance of going far in the competition let alone winning it. India, however, made their intentions clear by defeating two-time defending champions West Indies in their first game.

It was followed by a win over Zimbabwe and losses to Australia and West Indies. In their following campaign, they beat Zimbabwe thanks to Kapil Dev’s iconic 175-run knock. From thereon, there was no looking back as they beat the likes of Australia and England to make it to the final. In the final, they were up against the mighty West Indies and defended a paltry total of 183 to win the World Cup.
