Associate cricketer Rashid Khan has taken giant strides ever since his foray into international cricket at the latest ICC rankings serve as a testament to the prowess the Afghan has shown in his yet brief but extremely promising career. The 19-year-old, who won enjoyed a bumper 2017 ended the year by winning the ‘ICC Associate cricketer of the Year’ award.

And following his recent exploits against Zimbabwe in the bilateral series, the youngster has climbed to the epitome of the ICC bowler rankings list published recently. Rashid was the highest wicket-taker in the series, claiming a remarkable haul of 16 wickets for a total of 127 runs, at a staggering average of 7.9.

With the feat, Rashid became the youngest man at 7092 days of age and only the second youngest player ever behind Caribbean women cricketer Stefanie Taylor to top the ICC Player Rankings.

It seems quite unthinkable for a cricketer from an Associate nation to top the ICC charts. And it has not been an easy journey for the youngster who had to put his blood and sweat to climb the ladder of success.

Following his milestone, Rashid took to his Twitter handle and posted an inspirational message. He wrote, “The secret behind your success is hard work as the word(Impossible) by itself says i m possible Really proud moment and feel jubilant for becoming NO 1 ODI bowler,as it says ex paves the way to next thanks to fans for their warm support @ICC @ACBofficials.”

Rashid Khan tied at the first spot alongside Indian speedster

However, interestingly, the Afghanistan cricketer has to share his numero uno spot with Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah. Both Bumrah and Rashid are tied at the apex with 787 points each.

The Indian, who earned his maiden Test debut earlier this year, enjoyed a successful tour against the Proteas, adding two more points to his tally to top the leaderboard.

Meanwhile, Rashid’s batting cameo during Afghanistan’s 4-1 victory over Zimbabwe has helped him break into the top-five in the list of all-rounders as well. The bowling all-rounder added 51 runs during the tour, which included a brisk 43 in the final match at Sharjah and helped enhance his rankings.

He has also moved up 11 slots to take 115th place among batsmen.
