Former India team director Ravi Shastri has thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant position of head coach for the Indian cricket team. In spite of the BCCI not renewing his contract, Shastri has been the popular choice among many to become the next Indian coach. Reports have also suggested that the current Indian squad enjoys the management skills of Shastri. However, this would mean that Shastri would have to give up his position as a commentator.

On Monday, the 54-year old former Indian all-rounder stated that he had indeed replied to the advertisement put out by the board. He also stated that he had mailed to documents across four days shy of the application deadline.

“Yes, I have applied for the chief coach’s post today morning. I have e-mailed all the requisite documents that were asked for in the advertisement,” the former Indian all-rounder, who played 80 Tests and 150 One-Day Internationals during his 11-year international career, confirmed to PTI.

The BCCI is set to perform a screening process for the shortlisted candidates and announce a new head coach for the team prior to their tour of the West Indies. The Indians are scheduled to play a Test series in the West Indies starting from the 21st of July. Sanjay Bangar, the batting coach for the past year will now serve as the head coach for the Zimbabwe tour on an interim basis.

Ravi Shastri served as the Team director with a contract running up to the end of the World T20. Sandeep Patil, the former coach of Kenya as well as the chairman of the selection panel has also thrown his hat into the ring. J Arunkumar, the Karnataka coach and Daniel Vettori, the coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore have also reportedly applied for the job.
