India recorded their 8th consecutive series victory by taking an unbeatable 2-0 lead with the help of an innings win at the Colombo (SSC) in the ongoing 3-match Test series against Sri Lanka. India now stands behind England and Australia in most consecutive Test series wins as the Ashes rivals have won 9 Test series each in a row.

While India set to bag this record on their name, the newly appointed Indian cricket team head coach, Ravi Shastri expects India to break the record for the most number of 600+ totals in Test cricket held by Australia. India’s tally of 600+ totals in Test cricket increased to 29 during the Sri Lankan series; only three behind Australia (32).

Speaking exclusively to Deccan Chronicle from the team hotel, the Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri expressed his desire to see India on top of the list. “India can certainly surpass Australia’s record of scoring over 600 runs the most number of times. I am sure this team will surely achieve this. When, I can’t say.”

Shastri said that he will be happy that if the record will be achieved during his tenure it self. “Whether this year, next year or some other time. But I would be happy if it is done during my tenure as a coach with the team,” he added.

In the last 18 months, Test cricket has witnessed only seven totals of 600+ with India scoring six of those and the other one by Australia. All these six totals of 600+ India have recorded are in the last 8-9 months of time after spending 5 years without such total in Test cricket. With a 622-run total in the 2nd Test, Virat Kohli became the first captain in Test history to have six totals of 600+ during his tenure.

With one more game left in the ongoing series and India set to play another 3-match series against the Lankans later this year, it won’t be a surprise if India goes past the Aussies’ record by end of this year if their 32 totals of 600+ will be stationary.
