Ravi Shastri opens up on the possibility of T20 World Cup 2020 in October

The coronavirus pandemic has compelled the world to come to a standstill. The outbreak of coronavirus has taken a toll across the globe as more than 1.7 lakh deaths have been registered so far. Along with human existence, the pandemic has also put a halt to sporting activities. All major sporting events including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been postponed in the wake of the pandemic.

The much-awaited IPL 2020 has also been postponed indefinitely to tackle the outbreak of COVID-19. Amid this stern situation, chances of resumption of sporting activities look slim as many bilateral series have also been called off. This has put a big question mark over the future of the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.

Team India’s head coach has opined over the situation and has stated that it’s impossible to state over the future of the World Cup due to the current situation. Shastri also stated that sport seems a very minuscule part of life under the current circumstances through which the world is going. However, the Indian head coach does feel that the resumption of sports will put smiles on the faces of people.

“Will we have the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia in October? We don’t know really, do we? There is so much uncertainty currently that it will be impossible to state with any assurance when even thought will be given to the resumption of sporting activities,” Shastri said during an interview with Firstpost.

“Sport seems a very minuscule part of life under the circumstances, though I do feel that as and when we do get underway, it will definitely put smiles on the faces of people. I personally feel it will contribute to emotional and psychological well-being, but again, that’s in the future and as I’ve maintained, let’s not lose sight of the present in chasing the future,” he added.

Amid the current situation, Cricket Australia has already started planning for the events which are slated to be held in the latter part of 2020. A CEO Kevin Roberts has even proposed the idea of scheduling a five-match Test series between India and Australia at the end of the year. However, considering the COVID-19 outbreak, there is no assurance over the organization of any tournament or series.
