In what is turning out to be quite a debut for newly appointed skipper Ravichandran Ashwin, he managed to lead his boys to victory in a closely fought contest against Chennai Super Kings at Mohali on Sunday. Kings XI Punjab had posted a colossal 197 runs on board, courtesy a power-packed opening partnership from Chris Gayle and KL Rahul and followed by contributions from Mayank Agarwal, Yuvraj Singh and Karun Nair, they became the second team in the day to win after batting first.
They had done well to contain Chennai Super Kings early on as Shane Watson and Murali Vijay walked back to the pavilion soon. However, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni built a partnership that looked determined to take CSK over the line. Even though Rayudu was dismissed moments before he could reach his fifty, MS Dhoni began an onslaught that took the match to the wire.
In what initially looked like a watchful inning, Dhoni began to take the aerial route as the game approached the final overs. He took on the bowlers and ended up with his highest T20 score, a 44-ball-79. Interestingly, Mohit Sharma, who was quite expensive in the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, was not only backed to be in the squad but also to defend 17 from the last over.
Ashwin, being a bowlers’ captain, did so and the result was a success and resulted in a 4-run-win for his side. After winning against his former team, he took to Twitter to describe what the game was like. He said, “What an incredible game against
@ChennaiIPL, my first time in the other dugout, as always @msdhoni was brilliant in a chase. Thankfully we had enough resolve to dig deep. Well done to @imohitsharma18 on seeing us through.
