The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have had some of the best players in the business over the years, but they are yet to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) even once. They have qualified for the final three times, but haven’t been able to cross the finishing line. Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar also understands that despite having some massive names, RCB haven’t tasted much success.

Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Mitchell Starc and many other colossal cricketers have donned the RCB jersey. In the auction for the 2020 edition, the Challengers roped in Australian ODI and T20I skipper Aaron Finch in their ranks and will be hoping for their fortunes to change.

I am going to see the spin department: Sanjay Manjrekar

“We have always talked about some players missing at the start and then you have to catch up and stuff like that. But eventually it is about how you play over a long period of time,” Manjrekar was quoted as saying on Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected.

“They have had some geniuses in the team, not even great players, and despite that we haven’t quite seen the winning result,” he stated.

The upcoming IPL is scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and as per many experts, the pitches in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi will assist the spinners. Hence, Manjrekar, who’s also a renowned commentator, believes that the onus will be on the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar and Pawan Negi.

“I am going to see the spin department if they have any game changers. I am looking at Washington Sundar, Chahal and Pawan Negi as the three spinners because those are the ones that will make the difference, what we expect in the UAE just going by the track record,” Manjrekar added.

Among the three spinners, Chahal is the most experienced and RCB is again likely to pin hopes on him to make inroads into the opposition batting unit. In the last two seasons, the Challengers finished at the bottom-half of the points table and they will wish to make amends. The 2020 IPL will get underway on September 19 with the final to be played on November 10.
