The biographical films on cricketers’ lives in recent years have been very well received by the fans. The movies portraying the lives of MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, and Mohammad Azharuddin had taken the Box Office by storm. And the fans should now brace for another such move. According to media reports, the life story of India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik will now be told through a Bollywood biopic.
Karthik’s cricket career is nothing less than a roller-coaster ride. The Tamil Nadu star was tipped as the next big thing in Indian cricket when he made his international debut at the age of 19 in 2004. But he eventually became one of the several wicketkeepers tried out by India in the early 2000s before the arrival of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Even 15 years after his debut, Karthik has not managed to cement his spot in the team.
Karthik arrived in the Indian team as a batting prodigy on the back of heavy scoring in the domestic arena. But he failed to replicate those performances at the highest stage of the game. The performance on England tour in 2007 was one of the few occasions that showed the potential Karthik has but consistency has always been his nemesis. No surprises then that in his 15-year long international career, Karthik has played just 26 Tests, 91 ODIs and 32 T20Is. He was recently dropped once again from the ODI team for the ongoing series against Australia.
Moreover, Karthik’s life also makes up for a good Bollywood script. Not only his cricket career is full of ups and downs but his personal life has also panned out in the same manner. In 2012, he had to divorce his wife Nikita Vanjara after knowing that she was having an extramarital affair with his state and India teammate Murali Vijay. Karthik later married squash star Dipika Pallikal.
Nidahas Trophy heroics to be the core:
If rumours are to be believed, Karthik’s biopic will mainly focus on his stunning performance against Bangladesh in the final of Nidahas Trophy. India were in a spot of bother when Karthik had arrived at the crease. The Men in Blue needed 34 off 12 balls to chase down 167. Karthik rose up to the occasions and smashed 29 off just 8 balls including a final ball six when India needed 5 to guide the team to a miraculous win.
Reportedly, actor Vikrant Massey of web series Mirzapur fame will play Karthik’s role in the movie. Vikrant is considered to be the perfect choice for the movie as he resembles Karthik in his looks. Reports also suggest that the paperwork for the movie has already been done, and makers are likely to make an official announcement soon.
