Reports: Prithvi Shaw to be included in India's ODI squad against Windies

After a spectacular start to his Test career in the series against Windies, Prithvi Shaw is now being viewed as a probable opener for India even in ODIs. The young prodigy, who achieved a rare feat by scoring a century on his Test debut might be a tempting option for the management to try him as an opener ahead of the World Cup next year.

Though India’s top three in the limited-overs format is rock solid and has no room for changes, Shaw’s flourish in the Test series might see him being roped for the upcoming ODIs against the Carribean side. Though the squad for the first couple of matches has already been announced, Prithvi could be included for the remaining games.

Eye on the World Cup

The rotation of players is a way to test the young and raw talent at the highest level to give them the platform to excel in every possible format. This by no means is an indication to drop the regulars from the team. In the case of Shaw, the team management is keen to see how the youngster fares when given the opportunity even in the white-ball cricket.

“With an eye to the World Cup, the main focus was how to rotate players. In fact, more than rotation, it would be more about how to save our key players, ” a source told Indian Express.

An attempt to save senior players

The exposure to the rookies will also allow the sure starters with some time off the field. With the prestigious tournament not too far away, it is necessary to keep them fresh and be ready for every new challenge.

“That’s why you would see the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, Mohammad Shami in and out of the squad, not playing regularly. The players who are important for all formats will be adequately taken care of. Going ahead also, these things will keep happening,” the source added.

Prithvi has looked impressive in his stint as an India player so far and would be looking forward to grabbing his opportunity even in the limited overs format. The youngster has already expressed his desire to break into the Indian ODI XI before the World Cup next year.
