Reports suggest Sri Lanka cricketer accused of rape; receives suspension

In a rather shocking turn of events following the Sri Lanka series in against South Africa, Lankan batsman Danushka Gunathilaka has been accused by a 26-year old Norwegian tourist of rape along with the Lankan batsman’s friend in the hotel in Colombo. The news broke shortly after the star batsman was held up by the Lankan police shortly after the Lankan win in the match at Colombo.

Although there is no direct report linking towards Gunathilaka, there was a complaint made by the tourist stating that it was the Lankan batsman’s friend who lured two of these tourists into their hotel rooms and subsequently went on to rape them. A Lankan police officer was quoted as saying that they were in the middle of these investigations, so to speak.

Gunathilaka’s 26-year-old friend “is under arrest and we are continuing our investigations,” a police official told AFP. “A Norwegian tourist made the complaint of rape.”

Gunathilaka’s fee withheld with ongoing investigations

At the moment, this setback has seen the match fee of Gunathilaka withheld following these allegations. A statement released by the SLC reiterated the same. The report read, “withheld Gunathilaka’s fee for the ongoing Test match until the outcome of the inquiry,” it said.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) also went on to charge the 27-year old batsman with a ‘misconduct’ charge as well. While there were two women who went up into the room, only one of them stated that there was a Sri Lankan man with a British passport who raped her and the Sri Lankan police have gotten that man in custody as well.

However, at the moment, it would seem as though the Lankans are in celebratory mode after securing the series 2-0.
