Prithvi Shaw, the young Indian batsman, has shown high regards for Ricky Ponting, under whose tutelage he plays for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shaw made his IPL debut back in 2018 and impressed one and all. However, in 2020, he had a rough time in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where he managed only 228 runs from 13 matches.

Shaw has now lauded Ponting and in fact, wants the background score of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Chak De India’ to be played during the former Australian batsman’s pep talks.  Shaw also talked about Ponting on-field and off-field demeanour.

Prithvi Shaw praises Ponting

“The boss is back. He is a very nice person. On the field, he is like a boss, off the field he is like a friend. I think he is a very nice person. Let’s see how it goes (this year). Absolutely, I think when Ricky sir speaks, it should be played in the background. Shah Rukh Khan’s song,” Shaw told in a video shared by DC on Tuesday.

Earlier, Ponting put forth an interesting aspect of Shaw’s batting. “He had an interesting theory on his batting last year. When he’s not scoring runs, he won’t bat, and when he is scoring runs, he wants to keep batting all the time,” Ponting was quoted as saying.

“He had four or five games where he made under ten and I’m telling him, ‘We have to go to the nets and work out [what’s wrong]’, and he looked me in the eye and said, ‘No, I’m not batting today’. I couldn’t really work that out,” he added.

Back in December 2020, Shaw was dropped from the Test team after his shoddy performance in the tour of Australia. However, the 21-year-old from Thane, Maharashtra made a stupendous comeback in the 2021 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

In the event, he managed 827 runs from eight games at a staggering average of 165.40. His top score of an unbeaten 227 came against Puducherry in Jaipur.

Shaw also got scores of 185* and 165 against Saurashtra and Karnataka respectively. DC’s opening game is against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 10 and it remains to be seen if Shaw can make the cut.
