The retention ceremony ahead of IPL 2021 auctions has already taken place, and franchises have made their respective lists out, containing released and retained players. In meanwhile, franchises have also started trading in some players, and three-times champion Chennai Super Kings have roped in Robin Uthappa from Rajasthan Royals. It is a well-known fact that CSK endured a terrible IPL 2020 season and was expected to come with a complete revamp ahead of the new edition.

As the legendary skipper, MS Dhoni made his availability clear for the 2021 edition, fans are expecting their yellow franchise to come back stronger. CSK has always been in talks for fielding most of the aged players and that is why referred to as ‘Dad’s Army’. This time around, when CSK released players like Kedar Jadhav, Murali Vijay, and Piyush Chawla and retained youngsters like Sam Curran and Ruturaj Gaikwad, fans expected it for a better.

Here is how CSK announced Uthappa’s arrival

However, when CSK traded in 35-year-old Uthappa from RR, fans were again baffled to see this selection. The Twitteratis couldn’t keep calm and started criticizing Super Kings for this action.

Fans trolled CSK for roping in Robin Uthappa

Talking of Uthappa, he didn’t have a fine IPL 2020 season with RR as he failed to perform with the bat almost every time. However, the batsman is currently up in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and his knock of 91 off 54 balls has added to his value before entering the fresh edition of the cash-rich league. Apart from above mentioned aged players, Shane Watson was also released by the yellow franchise, who had already taken retirement post last year’s IPL.

CSK had a forgettable outing in 2020 as they failed to grab the playoffs spot for the first time in their playing history. Some of their main players pulled out of the season before commencement, and the team couldn’t settle its middle-order woes. The skipper MS Dhoni added that a certain spark was missing in the players, and even he failed to live up to the expectations of fans during the last season of IPL.
