Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar joined a long list of cricketers to donate a significant amount to the relief funds for India’s fight against Coronavirus. The man himself didn’t disclose the amount but former Mumbai batsman Amol Muzumdar informed everyone on Twitter that the little master donated Rs 59 lakh in total to PM CARES and Maharashtra CM Relief Fund.

The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Sourav Ganguly, Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Mithali Raj, Poonam Yadav and Richa Ghosh are the other known cricketers to have led their helping hand to the noble cause. While the amount which they donated has been different, none must have thought the way Sunil Gavaskar did while contributing.

On Tuesday, when Amol took to his Twitter handle to state Sunil Gavaskar’s donation amount, he wrote, “Just heard that SMG has donated 59 lakhs towards covid relief fund. 35 to @PMCaresFunds n 24 lakhs to @CMOMaharashtra superb gesture Sir,” his tweet read.

Sunil Gavaskar scored 35 centuries for India

After Amol’s tweet, Rohan Gavaskar jumped in to respond and clarified the reason for his father’s odd but significant contribution. He stated that Sunil Gavaskar smacked 35 centuries during his illustrious career for India which is why Rs 35 lakh went to PM CARES Fund.

Moreover, the superstar cricketer and now the commentator crossed the 100-run mark on 24 occasions while playing for Mumbai which led to him donating Rs 24 lakh to Maharashtra CM Relief Fund. Rohan also revealed that the donation was done last week itself which meant that his father didn’t let many know of the same.

“This was done last week . 35 because he scored 35 hundreds for India and 24 because he scored 24 for Mumbai . Prayers for everyone’s good health and that we are all safe and sound,” his tweet read.

As far as Sunil Gavaskar’s career is concerned, he scored a mammoth 10122 runs in 125 Test matches for India at an impeccable average of 51.12 along with 34 centuries. His other and only century came in the ODI format in which he mustered 3092 runs after featuring in 108 games. The 70-year-old’s career in the first-class circuit was exceptional as he amassed 25834 runs overall in 348 matches with 81 tons and 105 fifty-plus scores.
