Former India skipper Virat Kohli stepped down from T20I captaincy after India’s run at the T20 WC 2021 and in the dramatic turn of events, he was later removed from the ODI captaincy as well. However, the fans and experts were in for a shock when the ace batter stepped down from Test captaincy, a format where his leadership was claimed to be the best for India. In the same light, now India is in search of a Test captain with white-ball duties already with Rohit Sharma.

Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has come up with his views in the same context and added that Rohit should be given leadership across formats with KL Rahul as his deputy. This move will ensure consistency in style given that India has yet another T20 World Cup this year only.

“In my book, Rohit Sharma should lead India across formats with Rahul as his deputy. One captain across formats will ensure consistency in style and approach of the Indian team especially considering that we have another T20 World Cup later this year,” said Gambhir while writing his column for The Times of India.

I think Virat left the Indian Test team in good health: Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir also went on to add how India’s strength lies in their Test setup and they still have issues to resolve in their white-ball formats. The former opener also lauded India’s bowling in the purest format of the game and called for a settled middle order in the limited-overs games.

“Between the last Test and ODI series, the new space has been hogged by Virat resigning from Test captaincy. I think it is an individual’s call and that is how it should be treated. I think Virat left the Indian Test team in good health but I can’t say the same about white-ball cricket. Our bowling resources in Test matches are a neighbor’s envy and owner’s pride. They have shown time and again that they are the engine room for a team’s performance. In limited-overs cricket, I’d have liked to see a more settled middle-order which Virat couldn’t create,” added Gambhir.
