Sachin Tendulkar posts a witty birthday wish for VVS Laxman

He was an artist masquerading as a Test match batsman. An absolute magician with a bat in his hand; someone who played probably the greatest ever Test innings of all time. India vs Australia. Eden Gardens, Kolkata. 2001. Follow-on. 281. History. You know the gist right? Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman! Or simply what many called Very Very Special Laxman. It does not matter if you are a cricket fan of a certain vintage or someone who started watching this beautiful game in recent years, you’d know what I am talking about.

VVS Laxman played a plethora of memorable innings during his celebrated 134-Test career. Who can forget his epic heist at Mohali alongside Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha in Mohali (2010) against Australia or his match-winning knocks in Colombo and Durban, the same year (2010) or the twin-hundreds that he scored during the 2003-04 tour of Australia? 

But, still, the legacy of Very Very Special Laxman, who is celebrating his 45th birthday today (November 01) continues to be defined by the 281 that he scored against Steve Waugh’s mean-winning juggernaut masquerading as a cricket team in the summer of 2001. And, why shouldn’t it be? And it’s not only the quality of the opposition that made that knock by VVS special. It was the adversity of the situation (India were a million runs away from forcing Australia to bat again) and also his dodgy back; one that nearly ruled him out of the game which made that knock immortal.

Laxman- a nonchalant artist- is celebrating his 45th birthday- and the cricketing fraternity from around the world are expressing their regards for the legendary batsman. Laxman’s birthday brought out the witty side of Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin, who shared a plethora of memorable partnerships -none better than that 376-run-stand at the Sydney Cricket Ground- with the artist called VVS Laxman, took to Twitter to wish the right-hander.

Laxman was an ultimate saviour of the Indian Test team and alluding to the same, Tendulkar aptly captioned the photo as “When things got out of hand, it were his wrists that told us reLax Man! .Have a great birthday, Lax!”
