The IPL 2022 clash between the Punjab Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore saw the Mayank Agarwal-led side come out on top in a high-scoring affair by five wickets at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on March 27. More importantly, the game also witnessed Virat Kohli roaring back to form, and new skipper Faf du Plessis, creating a good first impression with a whirlwind knock.

However, in the second innings, when the duo was supposedly celebrating a dismissal, is when the passionate RCB fans felt that their brotherly affection was reminiscent of the Virat Kohli – AB de Villiers combo, which had enthralled all the fans of the franchise for a decade. AB de Villiers announced his retirement from all forms of the game in November last year.

Fans get nostalgic seeing Virat Kohli-Faf du Plessis bromance

The die-hard fans of the Bengaluru-based franchise remembered de Villiers after seeing Kohli and du Plessis’ on-field bromance during the season opener against PBKS. Here’s how they reacted.

Coming back to RCB’s first game of IPL 2022, Faf du Plessis scored a blistering 88 runs off 57 balls while Virat Kohli chipped in with a 29-ball 41, which propelled Bangalore to 205/2 from their 20 overs. In reply, a 71-run opening stand between skipper Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan laid a solid foundation for Punjab. Agarwal scored 32 runs from 24 balls while new recruit Dhawan scored a 29-ball 43.

After Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s dismissal, PBKS suffered a middle-order collapse before the duo of Shahrukh Khan (24*) and Odean Smith (25*) added finishing touches with an unbeaten match-winning partnership of 53 runs.

RCB did end up on the losing side on this occasion, but they would be hoping to put the loss behind them and rediscover their rhythm quickly as they gear up to face the Kolkata Knight Riders at the DY Patil Stadium on March 30. KKR will be oozing with confidence after a morale-boosting six-wicket win over the defending champions CSK in the curtain-raiser.
