There are very cricketers in the world who smile as much as Shikhar Dhawan while being on the cricket field. No matter what the situation is, one rarely sees that famous smile disappearing from Dhawan’s face. But make no mistake as, behind that ever-smiling face, there is a tough man who has made life difficult for bowlers across the world. The world once again saw that facet of Dhawan when he received a nasty blow on his neck while playing for India A against South Africa A in the fifth one-day game.

The incident took place in the third over of the first innings of the run-curtailed 20-overs per side game at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. Dhawan wanted to scoop the ball from Beuran Hendricks. But Hendricks anticipated Dhawan’s move and bowled a short delivery. In the meantime, Dhawan had already moved across the wicket and found himself in an awkward situation.

The India star tried to evade the rising delivery but failed. Consequently, the ball went on to hit Dhawan on his neck. The phyio came running into the ground for the mandatory concussion test. Fortunately, everything was fine and Dhawan continued to play although there was a visible swelling on his neck. The left-handed batsman scored his second half-century on the trot for India A.  He scored a 36-ball 51 including five fours and two sixes during the 135-run stand for the second wicket with Sanju Samson.

Following the game, Dhawan posted a video of the incident on Instagram with a motivational quote:

Samson reveals hilarious one-liner:

A while after Shikhar Dhawan posted the video, Samson commented on his post revealing what his senior teammate said after the blow.

Samson hilariously revealed that Dhawan told him, “Ball ko dekh toot gaya hoga (see the ball, it has broken)”. Dhawan was then quick to reply to Samson’s message and lauded the youngster for his match-winning innings in the final game. Samson starred with the bat, scoring 91 from just 48 balls as India A defeated South Africa A by 36 runs (DLS method).
