At one point in time, Kerala wicketkeeping-batsman Sanju Samson was deemed to do big in the international format but as soon as he started getting chances, he couldn’t live up to the hype. He was up in the final ODI that India played against Sri Lanka in the white-ball series and gave his wicket after a well-made 46. In the same light, former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt has criticized Samson for his lazy approach in the game.

It has to be noted that playing a fine ODI, Samson failed in the T20I games as he collected a total of 34 runs in the three games. He has been failing in his last nine consecutive T20I outings and this is why Butt feels that he has not taken any responsibility at all and would be gutted to miss on these opportunities.

It looked like Sanju Samson had a very casual approach: Butt

“Sanju Samson seems like a lazy batsman to me. When you know you are not able to pick a bowler (Wanindu Hasaranga), you should keep your pad ahead of the bat and play him out. But still, he was trying to play the ball on the back foot, and that too across the line. So, what happened what that Samson completely missed the ball and was trapped in front. It looked like he had a very casual approach. When you know that there are only five batsmen in the team and you are one of them, and two have already got out, you should have been more careful. But I did not see that effort from Samson,” said Butt on his YouTube channel.

After Krunal Pandya tested positive for COVID-19 in Sri Lanka, all the members who were in close contact with him were isolated immediately and a depleted Indian side took the field in the last two T20Is of the series. In this light, Rajasthan Royals batsman Samson was highly expected to take the responsibilities but he failed. Even head coach Rahul Dravid added that Samson might be a little disappointed with his outings in Sri Lanka. His chances might be a little slim on the international front from now.
