“Pakistan continues to be predictably unpredictable”. This was the quote of the day during the final day of the opening Test between Pakistan and Australia at the Gabba where Australia prevailed in a nerve-wracking thriller by a mere 39 runs. Chasing an unrealistic 490 to win in their 2nd essay, Pakistan gave Australia a run for their money and almost pulled off the match from the jaws of defeat.

Courtesy a brilliant fighting century by Asad Shafiq and very useful contributions from the lower order Pakistan managed 450 in their 2nd innings after getting bowled out for a meagre 142 in their 1st essay. The two sides will now meet in Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test and South Africa Shahid Afridi feels Pakistan has the ability to win both the matches and return triumphant.

“We have a great chance of finally winning a series in Australia,” the star all-rounder was quoted by the Express Tribune. “Pakistan showed great fight in the first Test, particularly Shafiq who scored an outstanding century. The Brisbane performance will definitely lift spirits.”

The former swashbuckling batsman felt that the pitches for the next two matches will suit Pakistan. “The tracks in Melbourne and Sydney suit the team,” he said. “Both Pakistan’s batsmen and bowlers will get help from the conditions and I am backing the team to win both the matches.”

The former captain also backed Mohammad Amir to play a telling role in the series who has received criticism for failing to replicate his performances as a mere 17-year-old. “I backed Amir’s selection [as a captain] for the World T20 since I felt he could be an asset for us,” revealed the Pakistan star.

“I have supported Amir because he showed remorse for his actions. I think he’s improving and did a fine job both with bat and ball in Brisbane. He can hopefully make an even bigger and match-winning contribution in the last two Tests.”
