Bangladesh fans can breathe a tiny sigh of relief as their best all-rounder might just take the field in the upcoming Asia Cup 2018. Their Test and T20I captain Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the tournament has carried a big question with it. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently gave a positive feedback on Shakib’s comeback in the near future.
The 31-year-old had suffered a finger injury while playing against Sri Lanka earlier this year. While this has deterred him from being involved in any cricketing action in the past few months, the situation looks less grim. It was earlier suggested that Shakib might require to undego a surgery which quite certainly would’ve ruled him out of the upcoming Asia Cup.
BCB chief highly hopeful of a comeback
As reported by BDCrictime, Minhajul Abedin Nannu, the BCB Chief Selector said, ‘We do not have any update of surgery yet, so we have not thought of the replacement to be honest. We will start thinking about it as soon as we have an update of his surgery. The camp starts on August 27 and we hope he will be able to join the camp.”
Shakib is currently in Meccah, Saudi Arabia to perform Holy Hajj. He had sustained a finger injury against Sri Lanka while playing against the island nation in a tri-series back in January, 2018. Subsequently, he missed the two-match Test series and two T20Is against the Lankans.
Before flying for Saudi Arabia, the all-rounder had hinted that he might skip Asia Cup to correct his injured finger through surgery. The BCB, however, is choosing to hope that he’ll be fit and fine before the tournament kicks off. Earlier a board official in a statement had said that they will leave it to the veteran whether he wants to play or opt out.
The Asia Cup 2018 is scheduled to begin from September 15 and will end on September 28. As of now, Shakib has been selected in the preliminary squad consisting of 31 members. He’s been the man of the hour for Bangladesh for quite some time now. From reigning the all-rounder rankings in Tests to ODIs, he has been an indispensable asset for the Bangladesh side and his inclusion into the team in the upcoming Asia Cup will give them a major boost.
