The usually soft-spoken Shakib Al Hasan has come out with a statement lamenting the way he was given out by Nigel Llong in last night’s match against Australia. The incident took place when Shakib came down the track against spinner Travis Head and got hit on the front pad. The Aussies appealed for an lbw and umpire Long gave the decision in the affirmative.

Shakib made his reaction to the decision clear when he said he was unhappy with the call, “Normally they (umpires) don’t give out when the batsman is well forward. If the umpire thinks it was out then I have nothing to say on the matter. But it’s unusual for a batsman to be given out lbw after coming down the wicket, I’ve never witnessed something like that before. Since umpires have started giving this type of decisions I hope consistency is maintained, let’s see what happens next.”

Shakib’s partnership with Tamim

Shakib did go for the DRS but the technology showed it as umpire’s call and Nigel Llong’s decision stood. The decision ended the rebuilding phase of sorts of the Bangladesh’ innings by Shakib and Tamim Iqbal who once again continued his good form with a solid 95 to Bangladesh’s total of 182.

Shakib termed the decision as the turning point in the innings. The partnership was looking good at 69 runs and Shakib said his dismissal was the difference in the team ending up with a total of 260 and the eventual score of 182. The all-rounder also gave his thoughts on the pitch which he said was different from the one they played against England.

He said the wicket was not a 300 plus one since the ball was bouncing up and down. He opined that had it not been for his dismissal, Tamim could have played a lot more freely and they could have gone on to a good score. Fortunately, the rain gods came to the rescue while the Australians were galloping towards the total.

Bangladesh had lost their first match against England and another defeat would have put their Champions Trophy campaign on a tentative slate. However, they ended up sharing the points with Australia who have had both their matches washed out due to rain. Even Shakib ended up admitting that the team was lucky in ending up getting a point.
