Former Australian great Shane Warne stated that swashbuckling all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is a match winner in his own rights and should be representing Australia in three formats of the game. Warne urged the selectors to simply “get him in” after the hard-hitting batsman was left out from Australia’s Playing XI for Sunday’s opening ODI against the Black Caps.

Maxwell had earlier stated that it was pretty painful to bat below wicket-keeper batsman Matthew Wade and his demotion in the batting order has hampered his chances of making a comeback into the Australian Test squad. Though Warne urged the selectors to pick Maxwell in the Australian squad, he felt that the hard-hitting batsman should have his concerns private.

Warne said that Maxwell’s all-round capability will be vital for Australia’s chances in the upcoming 4-match Test series against India and the selectors should embrace his match-winning abilities. “Glenn Maxwell is a super talent and I’d like to see him in Australian colours in all forms of the game,” the Aussie legend said.

“If there’s a spot for him, if he’s making runs, get him in.”

Warne felt that Maxwell was still a serious contender and a force to reckon with despite his drama-filled season. “He’s going to play some ridiculous, stupid shots,” Warne said on SEN.

“But you’ve got to take the good with the bad because out of 10 games he plays, he’ll probably win you two of his own bat.

“He’s a guy who has got flair and imagination. He’s a matchwinner.”

After Australia’s comprehensive victory in the 1st ODI, captain Steve Smith said that Maxwell was overlooked because they wanted to give Travis Head another opportunity and it had nothing to do with Maxwell’s disrespectful comments against his fellow teammate Matthew Wade.

Though Wade was unhappy with Maxwell’s comments, Smith stated that everything was normal between them and the dressing room scenario was perfect.
