Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar who took over as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in November 2015 has resigned from the position with immediate effect. Manohar was the ICC’s first independent chairman since May 2016 after quitting from the presidential position in the BCCI.

Citing personal reasons for his decision to step down Manohar sent his resignation to the Chief Executive Officer of the ICC Dave Richardson and Cricketnext quoted an ICC official confirming that Manohar had indeed put his paper. He had earlier replaced former BCCI president N Srinivasan at the helm in the ICC after the former was forced to quit.

The 59-year-old Manohar who is a Lawyer by profession served the first term as BCCI boss from 2008-11. After 4 years he was once again crowned as the BCCI prez to take the chair Jagmohan Dalmiya left vacant with his demise. The Nagpur man had shown a lot of character and strong will as the ICC chairman in taking a decision that hurt BCCI’s revenue big time.

He had a firm stand against the Big 3 system followed by the ICC and that played a crucial role in the rule being done away with during ICC’s recent meeting in Dubai. In his resignation letter, Manohar stated that he tried his best to do justice while making all the decisions. “I have tried to do my best and have tried to be fair and impartial in deciding matters in the functioning of the Board and in matters related to Member Boards along with the able support of all Directors.” He said.

“However, for personal reasons it is not possible for me to hold the august office of ICC Chairman and hence I am tendering my resignation as Chairman with immediate effect. I take this opportunity to thank all the Directors, the Management and staff of ICC for supporting me wholeheartedly.I wish ICC all the very best and hope it achieves greater heights in future.” Manohar further stated.
