After a dismal performance with the bat in the Test series against Pakistan in UAE, Aussies now aim to settle things in the 3-match T20I series against the home team. Before they head back home for a gruelling home season, the team will aim to salvage pride in the T20I series that follows.

However, the head coach Justin Langer is extremely concerned about the team’s batting as they gear up for some tough cricket in the months to come. They will host South Africa, India, and Sri Lanka at home in their lead up to the World Cup 2019. Firstly, they will take on the Proteas for a limited-overs series at home.

Langer backs Shaun Marsh for ODI series against South Africa

Ever since the ouster of David Warner and Steve Smith from the Australian setup pertaining to the Ball-tampering scandal, Shaun Marsh had emerged as the mainstay of their batting line-up. However, the southpaw had a terrible series with the bat in the UAE as he could only manage 14 runs in the four innings. Despite that, Langer still puts his weight behind the veteran to come good in the ODIs against Proteas.

He mentioned that Shaun’s recent form in 50-overs cricket as the parameter that gets him a go ahead in the ODI series. “On merit, he has to play the one-dayers. In his last five one-day internationals for Australia, he’s scored two hundred. You’ve got to be fair and you’ve got to reward people for performance,” Langer told cricket.com.au.

Runs at any level matter

The 47-year old believes that runs at any level are valuable. “Having said all that, to me runs are the currency of value, whether you’re making them in T20 cricket or one-day cricket or Sheffield Shield cricket or Test cricket, the only currency of value are runs. That’s just the truth of it so there’s a balancing act there.”

The Australian head coach even emphasized it is consistency that one needs to bring in his game, “The message has been, since day one, you’ve got to be a good bloke and you’ve got to score runs,” he told. “It cannot be a more simple message than that and that will continue whether you’re playing white-ball cricket or red-ball cricket so time will tell.”
