India opener Shikhar Dhawan was taken to a city hospital for a x-ray after the end of day three of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The left-hander got hit on his left thumb by a Trent Boult bouncer in the third over of India’s second innings. Dhawan got out for 17 adjudged leg-before wicket to Boult leaving India tottering at 34/3 in the 11th over.

Upon returning to the dressing room, the team doctor advised him for a check-up after the Delhi southpaw complained of pain. Before the hit on his thumb, Dhawan also picked up a knock on his shoulder, hit by another Boult delivery. It was learnt that he could be out of action for three weeks.

“He was at the hospital for five minutes roughly. The x-ray report is yet to come. There is some doubt whether he will be able to take the field,” a source close to the development said.

Ross Taylor and his fast bowling brigade featuring Neil Wagner, Trent Boult and Matt Henry successfully used the aggressive short pitch bowling strategy to unsettle the Indians. Matt Henry struck dispatches both the openers in quick succession to give Black Caps a quick breakthrough.

Boult then added Dhawan to his tally and further damage India’s attempt to build a huge lead. Rahane, too, was unsuccessful also departed cheaply.  Rohit Sharma, but, later dominated the visitor with his fluent 82 runs knock and helped India regain ground and extend their past the 300 runs mark.
