The once mighty Australians seem to have been reduced to a rather ordinary team after they suffered a whitewash at the hands of Pakistan in the recent T20I series. The visitors lost all three games in the series by sizable margins and were no match for Pakistan’s all-round strength. Tim Paine’s Test side also fell short in the 2-match Test series, and Australia weren’t able to turn things around in the shortest format either.
They were humiliated in the first T20I at Abu Dhabi after their top order collapsed remarkably, finding themselves at 22-6 at one point. The last two encounters in Dubai were for Australia to win, but Aaron Finch’s men were unable to chase down the targets on both occasions. Interestingly, Pakistan batted first all throughout the series and didn’t post totals bigger than 155.
However, the closest the Aussies came to any of those targets was to 136 in the 2nd T20I. For the hosts, opener Babar Azam was particularly impressive as he notched up 2 fifties as well as a score of 45 during the series. All-rounder Imad Wasim played his part as well, snapping up important wickets whenever his skipper called upon him.
A series of Australian mediocrity
It was a series that demonstrated Australia’s current crisis as their team is still going through a turmoil. The absence of Steve Smith and David Warner seems to be costing them dearly, and none of their young guns have proved to be good enough at the biggest stage. Skipper Aaron Finch will certainly take some heat once his side travel back home ahead of their next assignment. He not only failed to register a single victory but was dismal with the bat.
Finch finished the 3-match series with only 4 runs against his name. Glenn Maxwell was the only batsman from the visitors’ side who brought up a fifty. But for Pakistan, it was an authoritative victory that would considerably boost their confidence ahead of the World Cup. Former cricketers and fans were elated to see their side thump the Australians in their adopted home.
Former paceman Shoaib Akhtar was particularly proud of his side, and took to Twitter to say, “Congratulations! Pakistan you guys Outplayed Aussies in test & T20.” He also added, “Congrats on winning the t20 series comprehensively proud of you green caps..”.
