Following the inappropriate comments on the show Koffee with Karan, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya were suspended by the BCCI. The duo was sent back home and their suspension will continue until an inquiry takes place. Therefore, the selectors have named Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar as their replacements to fill the void that is created in the squad.
Vijay Shankar will immediately fly to Australia and join the team before the second ODI in Adelaide. The all-rounder could get at least one chance in the remaining two ODIs to prove his prowess. He will then carry on with the New Zealand tour as well. Shubman Gill, though, is only a part of the New Zealand tour and is a part of both the ODI and T20I squad.
Maiden call-up for young Shubman Gill
Courtesy his heroics in U19 World Cup and the Ranji Trophy, Shubman Gill is a household name. He hit 418 runs in the U19 World Cup 2018 at an average of 104.50 and played a crucial part in India’s triumph. His Ranji form has been unbelievable with the 19-year-old’s season average standing at 103. Gill played 37 List-A games and averages 47.72.
With his mate Prithvi Shaw already having made his international debut, Gill could soon make it too. Though, it seems difficult for him to make an ODI debut anywhere soon given the current combinations of the side. However, spending some time in the Indian dressing room will do Shubman Gill a world of good and it’d be a great experience for him.
Vijay, on the other hand, played five T20Is for India but failed to impress. Therefore, he was axed from the side. But, the 27-year-old yet again performed well in domestic cricket as well as for India A to earn a call-up. Moreover, he was the highest scorer for India A in their recent tour to New Zealand.
