The second day of the ongoing first Test match between Bangladesh and India at Chattogram saw the visitors gain total control of the proceedings as they showcased commendable performances with both the bat and the ball. Having lost half their side, Bangladesh now have a lot of work to do not only to reduce their deficit but also to overhaul the Indian team’s massive first-innings lead.

The hosts’ batting approach was completely lacklustre and even before they could realize what was happening, they had already ended up losing their top-order with hardly anything on the board and now the onus will be on the middle and the lower order to keep the Indian bowlers quiet from hereon.

Indian bowlers apply the stranglehold on the Bangladesh batters

Resuming their innings at 278/6, a well-set Shreyas Iyer could only add four more runs to his overnight score as he was bowled by Ebadot Hossain for an impactful 86 runs. After Iyer’s dismissal, it seemed as if the Indian innings would be unfolded quickly, but it was not to be as the Indian tail showed a great resistance.

Veteran offie Ravichandran Ashwin and wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav added a crucial 92 runs for the eighth wicket stand. Ashwin scored 58 while Kuldeep contributed with 40 and by the virtue of this key partnership India finished at a mammoth score of 404.

In reply, Bangladesh lost opener Najmul Hossain Shanto for a golden duck and his opening partner Yasir Ali followed soon for four runs against his name. However, there was then a small partnership between Zakir Hasan (20) and Litton Das (24) and once the duo was dismissed in quick succession, things started getting complicated for the hosts, and they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Veteran Mushfiqur Rahim (28) tried his best to keep the scoreboard ticking for Bangladesh, but he was sent back to the pavilion after being caught plumb in front of the wicket by Kuldeep Yadav as the hosts were reduced to 102/7.

Bangladesh then lost the wicket of Taijul Islam moments before the end of the day’s play. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (16*) and Ebadot Hossain (13*) then ensured that no further damage was done as the hosts finished at 133/8 and still trail by 271 runs. For India, Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/33 and pacer Mohammed Siraj contributed with 3/14.
