Australian opener Usman Khawaja was still batting at the crease at that moment in time, marching towards a historic double century. However, his innings was cut short by Axar Patel on the very first delivery after Tea as the southpaw fell just 20 runs short of a momentous double century.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill returned unscathed for the home side

Despite a flurry of quick wickets in the second session, the visitors managed to post 480 runs on the board, thanks to counterattacking 70 run stand between Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy. After a strong showing by the Australian batters on a benign surface in Ahmedabad, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten at the crease at the end of the day's play.

The pitch is not offering much for the bowlers and the Indian opening pair will be hoping to replicate the Australian batters when play resumes on Day 3. While Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green took home the plaudits after their magnificent centuries, Ravichandran Ashwin registered a brilliant six-fer to become the country's leading wicket-taker for an Indian against Australia in Test cricket, surpassing Anil Kumble's record of 111 wickets.
