Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan attacked the Pakistan national cricket team following their embarrassing exit from the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. Pakistan, who had a slim chance of reaching the semifinal, were knocked out of the tournament after a humiliating 93-run defeat against England in their last group stage game contested at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 11.
The team, led by Babar Azam, had been tasked to beat England by 287 runs within an unrealisitc number of overs to surpass New Zealand’s NRR (net run rate). However, they lost their hopes of reaching the semifinals right after England won the toss and opted to bat first. Furthermore, they went on to suffer a defeat and ended their campaign on a bitter note.
Several cricket pundits and fans criticized the Men in Green after their dismal outing in the marquee event. Pathan, who infamously celebrated with Afghanistan players after their famous victory over Pakistan, once again criticized them. This time, he aimed at the former Pakistani players who jibed him for his dance with Afghan players. “Kai padosi X cricketers ke dil ke arman ansuoo mein behe gaye,” Pathan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Pakistan suffers fifth defeat in ODI World Cup 2023
Speaking about the game, England won the toss and decided to bat first. The defending champions posted a mammoth 338-run target, thanks to half-centuries from Jonny Bairstow (59), Joe Root (60), and Ben Stokes (84). Haris Rauf was key for Pakistan as he claimed a three-wicket haul for 64 runs. Meanwhile, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr. got two scalps each.
Pakistan made the worst possible start as they lost openers Abdullah Shafique (0) and Fahar Zaman (1) very early. The No. 6 batter Salman Ali Agha played a crucial fifty despite the other middle-order batters being dismissed for paltry scores. However, his efforts went in vain as Pakistan were restricted to 244 in 43.3 overs. In the end, Pakistan finished fifth in the ODI World Cup 2023 point standings. Notably, this is the third time since the 2011 edition that the Men in Green failed to reach the knockout stage of the marquee event.
