The last league match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 saw Gujarat Titans (GT) securing a resounding win against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match number 70 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. It was pertinent for RCB to win the match if the three times finalists had to end up in the top four for the fourth consecutive year. But, the defeat against GT at their home ground ended their chances for qualification in the playoffs. Shubman Gill was named the Player of the Match following a scintillating knock of 104 not out.
Considering the fan following that RCB have, their fans were seemingly unhappy with the fact that Gill powered GT to defeat RCB and took to social media to troll Shubman Gill as well as his sister, Shahneel Gill. Affirming this incident, the Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal shared a post consisting of some of the posts from these trollers which indicated the level of the threats the 23-year-old and his sister received. Maliwal even vowed that action would be taken in a similar way that the committee took when netizens abused Virat Kohli's and MS Dhoni's daughters.
“Extremely shameful to see trollers abusing #ShubhmanGill’s sister just because the team they follow lost a match. Previously we had initiated action against people abusing #ViratKohli daughter…DCW will take action against all those who have abused Gill’s sister as well,” Maliwal tweeted.
DCW took action against people who threatened Virat Kohli’s and MS Dhoni's daughter
Earlier, in an atrocious incident, Virat Kohli's then newborn toddler, Vamika and MS Dhoni's young daughter, Ziva were also targetted by trolls, to which, the DCW was quick to respond and urged the Police to initiate a probe into the two incidents.
Following a complaint from the DCW, the Delhi Police had filed an FIR against unnamed individuals for allegedly making sexual comments on social media in regards to the daughters of Kohli and Dhoni. According to the police, the FIR was filed at the Special Cell division of the city police under the applicable part of the Information Technology Act, leading to an investigation.
